SlingPlayer now available for iPhone Courtesy Sling Media
An application that would allow users to watch video streamed from their home televisions over WiFi networks has been finally released by Sling Media. SlingPlayer is an application that lets you watch live and pre-recorded TV on a computer or mobile device. The catch is that you'll need to have a Slingbox hooked up to your home entertainment system to stream that TV over the internet to your computer or phone.
The good news is that while Sling Media had originally indicated that the iPhone version of the SlingPlayer would only work with the latest Slingboxes, it looks like most versions of the Slingbox should work.
On the other hand, the Sling Media's currently works on a Wi-Fi connection only and does not allow users to stream video over the 3G wireless network. The company had earlier planned to operate the application over-the-air on AT&T's 3G network and with the iPhone's WiFi chipset. However, AT&T had expressed concerned that applications like SlingPlayer could create congestion on the network that denies services to others. According to the statement, "Slingbox, which would use large amounts of wireless network capacity, could create congestion and potentially prevent other customers from using the network." It also said that applications that redirect a TV signal to a personal computer are specifically prohibited under its terms of service. Sling Media SlingPlayer is available for $30 in Apple's App Store.
